Durham comes back to dunk Cambrian
Men's Basketball: Durham defeated Cambrian 90-71 (Box Score attached)
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham Lords rebounded from a slow start to beat the Cambrian Golden Shield 90-71, and boost their record to 3-1 in OCAA men's basketball action on Friday night in Oshawa.
Underdog Cambrian made it a close game for three quarters, and even led 36-29 after one half.
"Our effort for the first 30 minutes was horrible," said Durham coach Desmond Rowley. "The last 10 minutes was better."
However, he added it certainly wasn't the polished effort he likes to see.
"Cambrian really played hard, and we didn't answer the bell" said Rowley.
But with the game on the line, the Lords responded well.
An Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) layup with nine minutes to play in the game put the Lords ahead to stay 58-56. Courtney Small (Oshawa, Ont.) and Smith teamed up to lead a big Durham run from there. They scored 28 and 25 points respectively, none more key than the buckets they recorded during this outburst, which gave Durham a 70-56 advantage by the time Cambrian called a time-out at 14:22 of the second half to stop the bleeding.
Durham started out slowly in the first half, falling behind the Sudbury college 11-2 before gradually pulling into a tie and then taking a 29-25 lead. The Lords seemed to lose focus late in the first half as hot-shooting guard Alain Monyele hit a three-pointer and a couple of free throws and Joel Almeida converted a fast break with just seconds left in the half to put the visitors ahead by seven at halftime. Monyele's 15 points in the first half, and 24 overall, led all Cambrian scorers.
To their credit, the Lords went on a 7-0 run coming out in the second half. Then it was nip and tuck before the big run by Durham during the final ten minutes of the game. Durham would outscore Cambrian 61-35 in the second half enroute to the 19 point victory.
Small put on a shooting demonstration going 11-for-15 from the field in just over 30 minutes of play. Small is averaging 19.5 points per game this season.
Smith was a monster on the boards, snagging 17 rebounds. It marked his second double-double of the season. The Ajax native leads the OCAA in rebounds (40) and is the top five of league scoring (19.8 points per game).
Tyler McGarrity netted 18 points for Durham in the win while teammate Tyler Pelley had five steals.
Jason Miller chipped in with 13 Cambrian points and 13 boards. His teammate Paul Mendonca had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Next action for the Lords is next Friday night at Centennial. Durham will return home on Wednesday, November 17 against Georgian College. Game time at the CRWC is at 8 p.m.
