In a major success for the security apparatus, India has successfully test-fired the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile from Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft.
The precision-guided missile was tested in the Bay of Bengal against a sea-based target.
Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated DRDO and BrahMos for the outstanding accomplishment.
"The successful maiden test firing of Brahmos Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) from Su-30MKI will significantly bolster the IAF's air combat operations capability from stand-off ranges," the defence ministry said.
What it means for India?
The move will add firepower to the India Air Force's combat capability.
The successful integration of the cruise missile with the fighter jets will allow the Air Force to conduct surgical strikes in the enemy territory up to a range of 300 km.
With the successful marriage between the supersonic cruise missile and the Indian Air Force's fighter aircraft, India has achieved a major milestone as it completes the cruise missile triad.
The BrahMos can now be fired from land, sea and air.
